This exciting addition to the CATALyST workshop menu offers middle grades and high school teachers an opportunity to focus on integrating reading and writing strategies while improving content knowledge in math and science. Working along side an education specialist, Dr. Kim Kimbell-Lopez, Associate Professor of Reading and Language Arts in the College of Education, the CATALyST staff provides a series of learning experiences that allow teachers the opportunity to engage in strategies that are designed to increase student achievement in the content areas.
In addition, focus is placed on how to enhance student writing in an effort to improve performance on specific items found on standardized tests. Furthermore, participants gather information on using concept maps and graphic organizers as spring boards for writing in math and science while learning how to provide students with strategies that help them overcome the reluctance to read.
